It is true that there are some 'human' foods that are edible by dogs. However, there are also many that could post hazards to your dog because they have different metabolism.
Some foods can cause mild digestive upsets, others could cause serious illness or even death. The following items must not be fed to your dog at all times. Of course we can't possibly list everything here. But the items below should give you a good start.
Milk & dairy products
Enzyme lactase is needed to breakdown the lactose in milk and other dairy products. However, dogs lack this substance and therefore could cause diarrhea.
Onion & garlic
Onion and garlic contain substances called sulfoxies and disulfides. They can damage red blood cells thus causing anemia.
Bones
Bones from fish, poultry, or other meat sources should not be given to dogs. When dogs bite or chew on those bones, fractures or splinters could enter the digestive system causing serious damage.
Grapes & raisins
Most of us would think it's save to feed our dogs grapes and raisins because it's healthy. However, it contains an unknown toxin that could do damage to the dog's kidneys.
Chocolate
Chocolate or any food that contain caffeine (e.g. tea, coffee) should not be consumed by dogs. They are very toxic and could damage the heart and the nervous systems.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms contain different kinds of toxins that could damage dog's systems in the body, leading to a coma or even death.
Raw fish
Raw fish can result in b vitamin deficiency in dogs leading to loss of appetite, seizures and in some cases, death.
Sugary & processed foods
sugary and processed foods are often oily and fattening, and dogs obviously could not digest these foods well. Also, it could lead to obesity and dental problems.
Spoiled food
Until this day, I still do not understand why dog owners would feed trash to their dogs. There are multiple toxins that could cause vomiting and diarrhea. Treat your dog like how you wanted to be treated.
Alcoholic beverages
This one is pretty obvious but I know some dog owners who occasionally feed their dog alcohol, which is a poor idea. It causes intoxication, coma and death, no joke.
So there you have it, the ten foods that your dog should avoid at all costs. By avoiding these foods, you should expect to save a few trips to the vet and also save a lot more money that are caused by lack of knowledge.
